BURSTOW WELCOMES COUNCIL REJECTION OF SUTTON SKYSCRAPER

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 25th Jun 2008

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has welcomed a decision by Sutton Council to throw out a developer's plans to build a 19 storey apartment block on the outskirts of the town centre bordering a residential area of Victorian terraces.

The developer, Aitch Limited, wanted to build 118 flats in Sutton Court Road with just 13 parking spaces. Mr Burstow had met with local residents in Morland, Reading and Alfred Road to discuss the plans and see for himself how the tower block would change the skyline. He wrote to the Planning Department in support of residents.

Commenting Paul Burstow MP said: "This is good news for local residents and councillors who have worked hard to make the case. There is no doubt this development would have changed the skyline of Sutton, it would have dwarfed the buildings around it. The Council has set out in powerful terms why it is turning down the plans.

"These plans would literally have cast a huge shadow over the neighbouring residential area. Now everyone will have to remain vigilant for further planning applications for the site."
