Burstow: 2007 - The year to Save Our St Helier12.00.00am GMT Mon 2nd Jan 2006 The New Year is a time to take stock and to look at what the future may hold. I'm not normally one for making bold predictions. But I will say this: I believe that 2007 will be a year of Hospital protests, both here in Sutton and across the country. The Government is certain to face massive discontent over its plans to 'reconfigure' the NHS. Last year saw protests right across the country as nurses lost their jobs and NHS beds were closed. By December, even Government ministers had joined local protests against cuts in their local area. Here in our borough, we are seeing the effects of the Government's plans for the NHS. We have also seen how local people have rallied to the NHS. I was proud to lead thousands of local people in a march to protest against cuts at St Helier. Thousands more have made their voice heard by signing the petition calling for the Hospital's future to be guaranteed. Yet there is still more to do. In the next few months I will be convening a health forum to give people a chance to tell local NHS bosses how they feel. I'll also be encouraging more people to sign the petition - anyone can sign by visiting www.saveoursthelier.org.uk. The campaign against cuts and closures goes on. Together we must make 2007 the year we Save our St Helier.
